Stepping Up

Adverse Childhood Experiences and the Criminal Justice System in Australia

The study is founded on the premise that comprehending the origins of trauma is pivotal in breaking generational cycles and initiating the healing process. By recognising that experiences and carried pain are not individual faults, a pathway to self-compassion emerges, acting as a catalyst for healing. The study emphasises the power of shared empathy within the community, acknowledging healing as both a personal journey and a collective responsibility. Childhood experiences, encompassing poverty, maltreatment, school exclusion, and police contact, are identified as precursors to serious offending and frequent criminal convictions in adulthood. This study conceived and directed by First Nations researchers with lived experience, the study delves into the relationship between adverse childhood experiences and involvement with the criminal justice system. Drawing insights from personal experiences, we aim to authentically portray perspectives central to understanding the complexities within the intersection of adverse childhood experiences and the criminal justice system. Key objectives include understanding risk factors, informing intervention strategies, breaking the cycle of intergenerational trauma, enhancing health outcomes, examining policy implications, and promoting overall well-being.
