Smart Justice: blueprints for systemic change

Smart Justice for Women and Smart Justice for Young People are two broad based Victorian coalitions committed to ending the over representation of women, in particular First Nations women, women from refugee and migrant communities and those with complex needs (including disability) and particular youth cohorts in the criminal justice system.

Based on our practice experience, the data and what our clients tell us, this problem is systems based, rather than program and services based, and unless change occurs at a systemic level the status quo will prevail and for some worsen.

We have developed comprehensive blueprints for change following significant consensus building across a broad coalition. Our experience and way of working has relevance nationally.

Presenters

Rachael Pliner Manager - Policy and Advocacy, Smart Justice for Women/Smart Justice for Young People

The presentation will be from representatives of Smart Justice for Women (SJFW) and Smart Justice for Young People (SJ4YP). The details of the presenters will be confirmed. Information on the coalitions are below.

Smart Justice is an evidence-based and human rights centred approach to reforming criminal justice policies and shaping the agenda on criminal justice around fairness and equality. The SJ4YP and SJFW coalitions recognise the need for a justice system that is fair and inclusive while creating opportunities for everyone to thrive. These coalitions are committed to transforming our justice system. Building a fair community means addressing discrimination, disadvantage, racism and the systemic issues that lead to justice system involvement, and providing early intervention, diversion and rehabilitation.

SJFW is a coalition of nearly 40 member organisations as well as leading academics and experts committed to ending the criminalisation of women in Victoria. SJFW includes members from the community legal sector, ACCOs, peak bodies, community services sector, legal sector, academia, and other organisations.

SJ4YP is a coalition of over 40 leading social services, health, legal, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander, and youth advocacy organisations working together to create change for children and young people who come into contact with the criminal legal system. The group works together to shift political and public attitudes, advise government on innovative evidence-based approaches, and to challenge policies and practices that harm young people. The coalition is informed by the experiences and voices of young people, experienced practitioners and leading researchers.
