Stepping Up

The School to Prison Pipeline – Using Trauma informed education practice to stop the flow of young people to prison in Australia.

Presentation will talk about the pipeline how using trauma informed practices and models such as CARE schools, Berry Street models and a throughcare / wraparound approach could cut the pipeline. With juvenile justice a touch point across every state and territory in Australia the importance of alternate ideas and views is paramount. Identifying and engaging with trauma of a young person and their family in a non-mainstream way has shown signs of success, but the conversation needs to continue. This presentation will combine examples of real-life practice and come from the point of view of a practitioner with a unique set of lived experiences having been in a CARE school principal team, currently working in reintegration, designing a school to meet the needs of young people and having been previously incarcerated himself. The pipeline is real – lets share how we can shut it down.

Dr Lukas Carey Reintegration Manager, Outcare, Australia

Dr Lukas Carey completed his Doctorate in Education and has worked in the field for most of his career as a coach, teacher, trainer, and educator. While filling a role in Australian local government he was charged with and convicted of receiving secret commissions and served time in prison. During and since Lukas’ incarceration, he developed a strong interest in the role that previously incarcerated people have in the development of policy and procedure in the justice system concerned with education, recidivism, and re-entry. As the current Reintegration Manager for a large not for profit in Western Australia, Lukas uses his own lived experience as a Credible Messenger to mentor, design and implement programs to improve re-entry possibilities for men, women, and young people.
